We do not permit hours building. UFC is a small, volunteer-run club for recreational flying. Applications solely to build hours for CPL/ATPL requirements will be rejected, and membership and access will be revoked if hours building is found.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a university student?
No. Despite the name, everyone is welcome to join — the club is open to all pilots and aviation enthusiasts.
Do you offer flight training or hours building?
No. We hire our aircraft to existing, experienced, licensed pilots for private recreational flying only — not training, and not hours building. We're not a commercial outfit; we're a small volunteer-run club that exists to benefit its members.
What licence and experience do I need to fly?
A CASA RPL or greater and a minimum of 70 hours total aeronautical experience. RPL holders also need controlled-aerodrome (RPCT), controlled-airspace (RPCA), flight-radio (RPFR) and navigation (RPNA) endorsements. If you don’t quite meet the requirements, have a chat with us first.
How does the check-out work?
All new flying members complete a check flight with a UFC-nominated instructor. Under 150 hours total time you’ll also complete 5 hours of instruction on the RV-9A (including the check flight) — this can be reduced case by case with logbook evidence of time on an RV-9/9A or similar Van’s aircraft (the RV-12 doesn’t count; waivers are at the insurer’s discretion).
What do members chip in with?
We expect everyone to help out: keeping the aircraft safe, clean and tidy, keeping the hangar in good order, and volunteering for busy-bee working days. That’s how the rates stay low.
How do bookings work?
Once inducted and checked out, members book VH-LAT through our online booking system at any time.
